American clears 236 meters for silver at 2024 Paris Olympics

McEwen and Kerr clear 236 meters, but Kerr wins on countback

American high jumper Shelby McEwen missed three attempts at 234 meters on Saturday, allowing New Zealand's Hamish Kerr to win the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. McEwen had cleared 236 meters on his second attempt, but Kerr cleared the same height on his first attempt, giving him the victory on countback.

McEwen, who is from Abbeville, Mississippi, was the surprise of the competition. He had never cleared 236 meters before, but he did so twice on Saturday. Kerr, on the other hand, is the reigning world indoor champion and was the favorite coming into the competition.

The competition was held in front of a packed crowd at the Stade de France. McEwen's performance was a major highlight for the American team, which finished second in the overall medal standings.
